NUKA Model of Care

The NUKA Model of Care is described as an example of unity that has several disadvantages that allowed team members to come together and better the health care system based upon customer driven care.  The NUKA Model allows Native Americans to have access to their health care, based upon their own rituals, beliefs, traditions, and cultural values.  The NUKA Model based their goals, interventions, and priorities of care upon the traditions and beliefs that have existed in the Indian tribes for many years.  This allowed the Indians to be more responsible for their care, which in the end resulted as a positive outcome.  The Indians were taking better care of themselves and taking independence upon their health care needs.
When the NUKA Model of Care started, it was simply a poorly funded system with minimal team members and customers.  The staff members included a mixture of native and non-native people.  These staff members worked with their customers one-on-one to meet their needs and emphasize what they wanted for their health care system.  The goal of the NUKA Model of Care was to better the pieces of the previous health care system that were not up to standards.
In the end, the NUKA Model of Care created integrated teams consisting of several members, a few being primary care providers, nurse practitioners, dietician, pharmacist, nurse midwife, behaviorists, secretary, and case manager.  Each team sees approximately 1,300 clients, all of which visit the team in person to enhance the team-client relationship and establish trust. This is critical in any health care system. Being able to say you trust your health care system team members is highly valued in today’s society.  Many times large companies tend to make us, the clients, feel as if we do not matter.  Having that trust and efficient team-client relationship is crucial and is what helped this model of care succeed.

  1. Kelsey,

I enjoyed reading your summary of the Nuka model and how you described the origin of it being developed. I think it is important to remember that it started because the health care system was not effective or meeting the needs of the people. I also like that it was developed by a diverse group of people that all had a common goal to improve the health care experience and health of the population. I think that should always be the goal. It will be interesting to see how the model has been implemented at the Cherokee Indian Hospital.
